The Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course is an essential first step for anyone wishing to ride a motorcycle or moped on public roads in the UK. This course is not a test, but a training session designed to ensure riders understand the basics of motorcycle handling and road safety.

CBT combines theoretical learning—covering traffic laws, bike controls, and the importance of protective gear—with practical, on-road experience under an instructor’s supervision. Once completed, learners earn a certificate allowing them to ride with restrictions (like no passengers and no motorway travel) for two years, after which they must pass the full motorcycle test or retake the CBT.

You must have a good working knowledge of the Highway Code before you attend. Find all the latest information about CBT from the Government website.

When you’ve completed Compulsory Basic Training, you’ll be allowed to ride on public roads and gain the experience needed to pass your practical motorcycle test. To give yourself the best chance of passing, you can take this further course designed to help get you through both the off-road and on-road modules of the test.

You must hold a valid CBT certificate before starting your training and, ideally, have passed your theory test.

Find all the latest information about tests for motorcycles and mopeds from the Government website.

You’ll need to pass both the theory and practical test to get a full licence. Once you’ve passed your theory test, you’ll take the practical test, which consists of:

  • off-road riding test (known as ‘module 1’)
  • on-road riding test (known as ‘module 2’)

You can book the riding tests separately or at the same time, but you must pass module 1 before taking module 2.

If you’ve already obtained a full standard category A licence and you reach the age of 21 before the two-year qualifying period is complete, you may opt to take a further test on a motorcycle with a power output of at least 35kW (46.6bhp) to gain immediate access to all motorcycles.

This is called Accelerated Access. You can practice for this test on motorcycles above 25kW only if a certified motorcycle instructor accompanies you on another motorcycle and you display ‘L’ plates. You do not need to complete CBT again or pass another theory test.

Again, for riders over 21, but with this scheme, you need to take (and pass) only ONE test to give you direct access to any size of motorcycle. This test must also be taken on a motorcycle with a power output of at least 35kW (46.6 bhp). Before taking the Direct Access Scheme course, you must complete CBT satisfactorily and pass the theory test even if you have a full car licence.

So that learners aged 21 or over may practice for the large motorcycle test, they may ride a motorcycle that exceeds the UK learner specification on public roads, but only under the supervision of a certified Direct Access instructor.

The usual learner restrictions will apply when learning on a large motorcycle (`L’ plates, no pillion passengers and motorway prohibition).

For riders who want to refresh their motorcycle skills after a significant break, this course will assess their current abilities to identify specific areas to focus on. The course will cover essential skills, including road safety awareness, handling and control at various speeds.

This course reacquaints returning riders with the fundamentals of motorcycling and instils confidence, ensuring they are well-prepared to navigate today’s roads safely.

Once you’ve passed your test you may want to improve your riding skills. For further details of these and other courses please feel free to contact us.

£20.00 – only if you have taken your CBT with us.

If you are using your own motorcycle, it must be insured and taxed by you.

Gear up to start your riding adventure at XS Rider Training School, the first choice for motorcycle training in West Yorkshire. As an officially approved training body and specialists in Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), we don’t just teach you to ride; we give you the skills and confidence to master the roads.

A CBT course is mandatory for new motorcycle or moped riders in the UK before you can ride unaccompanied on public roads. It teaches you basic riding skills, road awareness, and safety measures.

Our CBT training is a full-day course that combines theoretical and practical learning. Most of our courses run at weekends. To book a weekday course, please get in touch with us.

CBT Free Returns! We’re committed to developing competent riders. If you need more time to complete your training, XS Rider Training School will not charge you for your second day. If you don’t complete on the second day, we’ll charge 50% of the course fee for the third day. No other school does this!

The DSA has now implementeed a two part testing system. Part one must be passed first, and is done under controlled circumstances at suitable testing site. This could be one of the new Multi-purpose Test Centres, or a nominated ‘casual’ site, normally a VOSA site. More details can be found on the DSA website HERE. Basically the clock starts ticking from when you pass your motorcycle theory test. If ;you pass your part one off-road practical test, the certificate you recieve is only valid until the end date of your motorcycle theory pass certificate. If you intend to do your part two practical test, you must complete it by this date, or else you will have to start the whole process again.

These regulations apply now but may change in the future. At present, if you choose to take your practical test on a 125cc motorcycle, capable of reaching 62mph, and pass, you will be able to ride any motorcycle of any cc conforming to present legal requirements (Taxed,Tested (if required) ,Insured etc) BUT IT MUST BE RESTRICTED TO 33 Brake Horse Power. The restriction is achieved by fitting/having fitted an approved restrictor kit which come in several different guises, depending on the motorcycle you are restricting.

After two years have elapsed since passing your 125cc test, you are automatically allowed to then ride any size motorcycle unrestricted. i.e. if you have a restricted bike, after two years from the date of passing your test you can legally remove the restrictor kit. You do not have to send your license away for this change.

If you decide that you wish to ride a motorcycle of any size after passing your test, then you must take the Direct Access motorcycle test. Unfortunately there is an age restriction to this. YOU MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OVER TO DO THE DAS PRACTICAL TEST. After passing this type of test, you are legally entitled to ride a bike of any cc unrestricted, provided that bike conforms to the legal requirements, i.e. Taxed, Tested, Insured etc.(Back

When you are deemed competent on a 125cc motorcycle, by assessment by our instructors, you will do your DAS training, and take your practical test, on a 500cc motorcycle (at present we use Suzuki GS500 motorcycles). You will be accompanied at all times by a trained instructor as you are not allowed to ride un- supervised on a bike of this size.

DAS is not suitable for all candidates, and we wouldn’t recommend a DAS course to just anyone. In order for us to consider you for a DAS course, you must first have satisfied our instructors that you can handle a 125cc motorcycle without any problems. Any control problems must be addressed before attempting to ride a bigger motorcycle as the comsequences of a mistake on a ‘big bike’ could be far more serious than on a 125cc bike. Once you have satisfied us that you can competently handle a 125cc bike then you will be put forward to take an upgrade lesson, where a qualified instructor will explain the differences between the 125cc and 500cc motorcycles other than size (they aren’t as obvious as you think!!). You will then do the remainder of your lesson on the 500cc bike, allowing you to get used to the speed and handling of the bigger bike.

It is compulsory that you have with you the following and failure to produce WILL result in the termination of your test, without compense:-

  • Both parts of your Driving License. If you DO NOT have a two part driving license, then you MUST take with you a current passport for photographic identification.
  • A Current DL196 CBT certificate

We also insist that you take your Theory Test Pass certificate. You may or may not be asked to produce it, but if asked, failure to produce could result in the termination of your test fee before you even sit on the motorcycle.

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE THE ABOVE DOCUMENTS! On the day of your test we will ask you if you have all your documents. If you say you have, but you’ve forgotten even one of the above documents, and your test is terminated, we cannot be held responsible.

It will become clear that in order to have a good lesson, you should be refreshed, and ready to concentrate on the task in hand. This goes doubly for your practical test. Whether doing a 125cc or a DAS test, you will be under scrutiny by a trained examiner, and should be ready for this. To this end, you should be prepared to get a good nights rest before your test. Don’t go down the pub. Don’t watch TV till the early hours. Remember you have a lot invested in getting to this stage, and it would be silly to waste the opportunity by not being able to concentrate. You will have a ‘warm-up’ lesson before your test, so listen to your instructor. On the ride over to the test centre, you will be consolidating all the information and skils you have learned in the previous lessons.

Important Information – MUST READ

Riding Suitability

Before booking, please be aware that motorcycling isn’t for everyone, but in our opinion, it’s one of the best things you can ever do! While we can teach you how to ride, we can’t teach balance, so before you book, consider whether you can ride a bicycle.

As a road ride is part of the CBT, every learner must have a good working knowledge of the Highway Code.

CBT Course Timing

Our CBT training is a full-day course. Most courses run at weekends, starting at 8.30am (unless you’re given an alternative time) and finishing no later than 5pm. Please contact us if you’d like to book a mid-week course.

Your day will start at the main office and move onto the designated training ground. The trainee-to-instructor ratio is 4:1 on the training ground and 2:1 on the road assessment at any time. Please note there will be other trainees on the training ground of varying abilities. An instructor will give you dedicated training if we deem it necessary.

The time taken to complete your course will depend on how many people are doing the course on the day, the time each person takes to reach the required standard for each part, and the weather. Courses usually finish around 4pm but no later than 5pm.

All Other Course Timings
Timings for all other courses will be confirmed when booking.

Extra Assessment

Be aware that you’ll be asked to come back at a later date to re-do the course if you don’t reach the required standard for CBT. You won’t have to pay for the second day of this extra assessment but will be charged 50% of the course fee if a third day is needed.

Non-Attendance and Notice Period

If you don’t turn up at the mutually agreed date and location for your course or extra days of CBT training without giving at least 72 hours’ notice – or if you fail to turn up at all, you will be charged the full price for the day.

Meeting and Finishing Point

We meet at our office before going to the training site.
22 Barnsdale Road, Allerton Bywater, Castleford, WF10 2AW.

CBT trainees – please arrive at our OFFICE at your allotted time slot.
Lesson trainees – please arrive at our OFFICE 15 minutes before your lesson is due to start.

Please call if you are going to be late or wish to meet us at the training site. Please note that courses will also finish at the office.

Food and Drink

There are no catering facilities, so please bring a packed lunch or means to get food and drink. Whatever you take with you has to be carried away from the training ground whilst on a bike, so a rucksack or some means of carrying your belongings would be helpful.

Driving Licence

You must bring your photo driving licence. If you only have a paper licence, a photo ID will be required. The following are the only documents to be accepted as photo ID:

  • Current signed passport
  • Workplace identity card
  • Trade union or students’ union membership card
  • Card for the purchase of rail tickets
  • School bus pass
  • Photographic cheque guarantee or credit card
  • Photograph that’s suitably certified by an acceptable person

If you fail to bring your driving licence, the training will not proceed, and you’ll still be liable for the full cost of the course. If in doubt, please call us.

Clothing

Please ensure you dress for the weather conditions and safety. Below is a list of clothing we prefer you to wear:

  • British/European standard safety helmet. If you have a visor, it must conform to BS4110 or the new EU standard—no coloured or black visors.
  • Motorcycle gloves.
  • Sturdy waterproof boots. They should give you ankle support and have crush- resistant soles. Walking and work boots are acceptable, but motorcycle boots are best.
  • Motorcycle trousers are preferred, but the minimum must be thick denim jeans. Waterproof over-trousers would be good also.
  • Motorcycle jacket. The minimum must be a thick jacket.

For CBT training, we have some jackets, helmets and gloves you can borrow. But as a minimum, wear jeans, sturdy boots and a warm jacket.

For your practical test, as a minimum, you will need thick jeans (no skinny jeans or ones with holes), boots and a helmet, if possible. We have some items available to borrow for the test, but it’s always best to check with us for availability.

Whilst it may feel warm, once you get riding the temperature will drop. So wrap up warm! Tracksuit bottoms/leggings can be worn under your top layer of jeans or motorcycle trousers. Tracksuit tops, hoodies and other base layers can be worn under your protective jacket top layer.

Theory Test

Before booking a motorcycle test, you will need to have passed your motorcycle theory test. Ideally, you should also have taken the theory before test training. Find out more about the theory test on the Government website.
